California high school track athletes have been hitting qualifying marks all winter to qualify for the California Winter Championships. We have listed their schools in the preview, but since track season has not officially started in California, they will be running unattached or as a club athlete. Here is a preview of the distance races on Saturday.
1500 Meters
There are 22 girls who ran under five minutes to qualify for the 1500 meters. Some of the top seeds include Megan Crum of Temescal Canyon, Katja Dunayevich of Canyon Crest Academy, Ananya Balaraman of North Hollywood, Isabella Wroblewski of Yorba Linda and Adamara Esparza of Santa Ana.
The top boys to watch on Saturday include Taye Newman of JSerra, Paul Huato of Del Oro, Zion Ortiz of Burroughs Ridge, Liam Miller of South Torrance and Daniel Reza of Chaffey.
600 Meters
In the 600 meters run, Anne Elise Packard of JSerra ran the fastest qualifying time. She will be pushed by Arza Gercek of Portola, Packard's teammate Chloe Elbaz of JSerra, Savannah Harris of Lick Wilmerding and another JSerra athlete Morgan Woolforde.
Only a second separates the top five boys in the 600 meters. Ejam Yohannes of Loyola, Ian Hansen of Mira Costa, Gus Armstrong of Long Beach Poly, Trajan Cephas of Norco and Cameron Mobley of Twelve Bridges will be tight bunch in the boy's 600 meters.
3000 Meters
Charlotte Hopkins of host school Arcadia and Megan Crum of Temescal Canyon have similar top seed times. Isabella Wroblewski of Yorba Linda, Amelia Sarkisian of Brentwood and Elizabeth Jacklin of Martin Luther King are other contenders in the girl's 3000.
Liam Miller of South Torrance has the top seed time in the boy's 3000 and he will have company with Ryan Fitzpatrick of Nueva, Taye Newman of JSerra, Eamon Gordon of Dos Pueblos and Jack McDonald of El Dorado with excellent 3000 meter qualifying times.
The meet also has 4 X 800 meter and distance medley relays.
