Preview of the last high school cross country of the season. Footlocker Nationals will be raced on Saturday in San Diego. Here is a look at the west coast athletes competing on Saturday.
Girls Championship 9:15am
Some of the national favorites include defending Footlocker champion Elizabeth Leachman of Boerne Champion (TX), Victoria Garces of Midland Dow (MI), who finished second at last Saturday's NXN race, Zariel Macchia of William Floyd (NY) and Abby Faith Cheeseman of The Webb (TN) who are both competing in their fourth Footlocker final.
Chiara Dailey of La Jolla. Dailey will be competing at her third Footlocker National meet. Last year Dailey finished 11th and comes into the meet with excellent 2024 cross country credentials. She finished second at Woodbridge Invitational and ran the fastest time in all divisions at the California State Meet. Cassidy Armstrong of Ballard won Footlocker West in convincing fashion and won Nike Hole in the Wall XC Invitational in Washington with a 5000 meter time of 16:43.4. Jaelyn Williams of Eastlake comes into the Footlocker with noteworthy credentials. Williams won the California State Meet 3200 last June and in 2023 finished seventh at NXN. Ayanna Hickey of The Bishops Schools joins Dailey and Williams as local San Diego athletes and will find supportive fans along the course. Erika Kirk of Vista Murrieta won the Rated Woodbridge Invitational race in September and Nicole Alfred of Rancho Cucamonga has raced at the California State Cross Country meet in all four years of her high school career.
Boys Championship 10:00am
National athletes to watch include Keegan Smith of Knoxville Catholic (TN) who won Footlocker South and finished sixth at last week's NXN meet. Tamrat Gavenas of Phillips Andover Academy (MA) is the top returner finishing third at Footlocker 2023. Juan Gonzalez of Fremont (NE) won Footlocker Midwest and NXR Heartland and finished 10th last year at Footlocker.
West Coast athletes took eight of the top ten spots at Footlocker West. Tyler Daillak of Paso Robles (CA) won Footlocker West and made his name known by breaking 15 minutes at the Clovis Invitational. Kade Brownell of Mt Spokane (WA) ran Footlocker last year and qualified for NXN. Trey Caldwell of De La Salle (CA) is another Footlocker veteran, won Mt SAC and set the Crystal Springs Invitational course record in October (Eli Fitchen-Young of Santa Cruz has since broken the course record). Josiah Tostenson of Crater (OR) won the Clovis Invitational and finished a close second at the Woodbridge Invitational. Unfortunately Tostenson was sick at the end of the regular season, but based on his result from last Saturday it looks like his fitness has returned. Max Douglass of Corona Del Mar (CA) is the CIF Southern Section D4 champion. Conor Lott of Clovis North (CA) won the California State Meet Division 2 race. Aydon Stefanopoulos of Los Gatos (CA) ran at NXN last year and Vincent Recupero of Bishop Blanchet (WA) was the Washington State Meet Division 3A runner up.
