MLK's Summer Practice

On a warm summer morning, Martin Luther King High School athletes met on the school track for the start of practice. The athletes warmed up to a local park and broke up into groups for an interval work out on the grass. Once the team returned to the campus, the athletes finished with 200-meter striders, cool down on the field turf and then time in the weight room. School is starting next week and some of the runners were helping and welcoming the incoming freshman. Start of school is almost here!

Coach Ibarra with his athletes

Martin Luther King High School is located in Riverside, California and competes in CIF Southern Section division 1 level. Coach Alfonso Ibarra shared information about the Martin Luther King program:

During the summer season, how often does the team practice?

This summer, we hosted a seven-week camp divided into two sessions. We began with three weeks of practice, followed by a two-week break during our regulated CIF period, and then concluded with four more weeks leading up to the start of school. We practice Monday through Saturday, with our varsity team participating in double workout days twice a week.

What are some special summer activities?

Some special summer activities we have hosted this year include our run down at Lake Perris where our parents and booster club were generous enough to bring breakfast for the athletes as well as reaching out to Chick fil A to sponsor the meal after a lengthy long run. We also recently hosted our first official media day where we allowed our athletes to dawn the King uniform for the first time this season and have a photoshoot designed to have pictures ready to highlight them throughout the season on our team Instagram.

How do you build team culture?

After most practices this summer, we wrap up our workouts with team bonding activities, such as 'get to know me' games or tasks as simple as keeping a ball up in the air. Our athletes thrive on pushing each other during workouts, but we also prioritize easy mileage days, where we can relax and get to know our teammates on a leisurely run.

What are some events that the team is looking forward to in the fall season?

We're eagerly anticipating the upcoming races, including prestigious events like the Woodbridge Invitational and our annual trip to the historic Clovis Invitational. Our athletes have ambitious goals they're eager to achieve. They also cherish our pre-race spaghetti dinner nights, not just for fueling up but also for unwinding and enjoying each other's company. We're counting down to our season opener at the Cool Breeze Invitational, ready to showcase the results of our hard work this summer!
