The legendary Armory will host a four day indoor track championship starting on Thursday, March 13 and ending on Sunday, March 16. We will highlight west coast athletes competing in the championship distance races.


Thursday

The 5000 meter championship race will be on the first evening of Nike Indoor Nationals. NXN champion Jane Hedengren of Timpview (UT) and Zariel Macchia of William Floyd (NY) are the national headliners in the girl's race. West coast runners of note include Cassidy Armstrong of Ballard (WA) who qualified for Footlocker in December, Rylee Blade of Santiago (Corona) who won California's D1 cross country title last fall, Emily Wisniewski of Crescent Valley is the first Oregon athlete to win four Oregon state cross country titles and Elyse Henriksen of Lincoln who has raced at NXN twice with her Lincoln of Oregon team.

Marcelo Mantecon of Miami Havana and Brogan Collins of Cheyenne Mountain finished in the top 20 at NXN and Jack Bowen of McCallie (TN), a Footlocker finalist, are some of the national runners to watch in the boy's 5000 meters. Eyan Turk of Woodcrest Christian also finished in the top 20 at NXN and is the division 5 champion at the California State Meet. Malachi Schoenherr of Sheldon won the 6A Oregon state cross county title in November. Another west coast athlete is Liam Beighley of Mission Hills who was a California cross country state meet qualifier.


Friday

Entered in the championship two-mile include Ella Hagen of Summit (CO), Addy Ritzenhein of Niwot (CO), Mia Sirois of Barrington (IL) who all finished in the top ten in December's NXN meet. Lily Alder of Timpview (UT) ran 10:22.09 in the 3200 at the Simplot Games in February. Sophia Rodriguez of Mercer Island (WA) also finished in the top ten at NXN and is entered in Friday's championship two-mile. Cassidy Armstrong, Rylee Blade and Emily Wisniewski return from Thursday's 5000 to race in the championship two-mile.

NXN champion Charlie Vause of Rio Rancho (NM) headlines the boy's championship 2-mile. Other top ten NXN finishers include TJ Hansen of Freeland (MI), Tommy Latham of Marist (GA), Corbin Coombs of Organ Mountain (NM) and Aiden Le Roux of Cheyenne Mountain (CO). Another NXN top ten finisher is Evan Noonan of Dana Hills, who is also the three time D3 California state cross country champion. Other west coast athletes racing in the championship two-mile includes Malachi Schoenherr, who will compete in Thursday's 5000, Miles Cook of Sacred Heart Cathedral, who finished third in the California's D3 cross country state meet, Ryan Fitzpatrick of Nueva, who finished tenth in California's D5 cross country state championship, Liam Miller of South Torrance, who finished second in the California's D3 cross country state championship, Theo Udelson-Nee of Wildwood, who finished seventh in California's D5 cross country state championship and Kellen Williams of Jesuit, who finished fourth in Oregon's 6A state championship.


Sunday

On the final day of competition, the championship 800 and mile will be contested. In the championship girl's 800, Dylan McElhinney of Hunter College (NY) ran 2:06.07 last spring to win her New York state championship. Reagan Moore of Oak Knoll (NJ) ran 2:04.80 last week at the New Jersey Meet of Champions. West coast athletes to watch in the 800 include Makenna Herbst of Carlsbad who finished second in the 800 at the California State Meet. Sophia Malinoski of Lincoln is the defending Oregon 6A 800 meter champion. Taylor Davis of Santiago (Corona), Ashlin Mallon of Maria Carrillo and Nicole Samson of Santiago (Corona) all from California are in the 800 championship races.

In the boy's championship 800, sophomore Cooper Lutkenhaus of Justin Northwest (TX) is the top seed. Lutkenhouse set the national high school 800-meter indoor record in February at the Millrose Games (held at the Armory) in a time of 1:46.86. Wyland Obando of Long Beach Wilson who finished second in the 800 at the 2024 California State Meet is entered in the championship 800. Other west coast athletes in the championship 800 include Lucas Alberts of Jesuit (CA), Mack Aldi of Carmel (CA), Samuel Fredrickson of El Camino (CA), Findlay Hartshorn of Bear Creek (WA), Ryan Khoury of Stanwood (WA), Aberra Mekdem of Oakland (CA) and Asher Samuel of Culver City (CA).

In the girls' championship mile, familiar names from earlier races at Nike Indoor Nationals are entered like Jane Hedengren, Zariel Macchia, Dylan McElhinney, Addy Ritzenheim, Mia Sirois, Rylee Blade and Sophia Rodriguez. West coast athletes of note include Ellery Lincoln of Lincoln won the 6A Oregon 1500 state title last spring, Braelyn Combe of Santiago (Corona) qualified individually for NXN in December and Alexa Matora of Lake Washington has run impressive indoor times at the University of Washington this winter.

Athletes previewed earlier race the championship mile like Miles Cook, TJ Hansen, Ryan Khoury, Evan Noonan, Malachi Schoenherr and Charlie Vause. Other top entries in the championship mile include Corbin Coombs of Organ Mountain (NM) won the Arcadia Invitational mile last spring and Caden Leonard of Southlake Carroll (TX) finished third at NXN.
