Here are some of the West Coast athletes competing in distance events this weekend at Nike Outdoor Nationals
Saturday - 800 Meters
Ashlyn Boothby of Scotts Valley finished second at the California State Meet 1600-meter race and is entered in the 800-meters with a personal best time of 2:10.37. Tessa Boswell of Poway finished third at the California State Meet in a time of 2:08.53. Georgia Jeanneret of JSerra finished right behind Boswell at the California State Meet with a time of 2:09.84. Alurra Markow of Dana Hills just raced the mile at Brooks PR and will run the 800 and has a personal best time of 2:11.66. Tatum Olesen of Menlo-Atherton also ran in the California 800-meter state final with a time of 2:10.25.
Wes Shipsey of Central Catholic broke the school record last week in the 800 at the Portland Track Festival and hopes to lower the time. Shipsey has run a personal best time of 1:50.40. Kellen Langford of Arlington won the 3A Washington State Meet 800 in a time of 1:51.67 and is in the Garmin Championship race. Joseph Lighthall of Hughson won the California State Meet in 1:52.06 and is entered. Gabriel Rodriguez of Great Oak has run 1:51.79.
2-Mile
Rylee Blade of Santiago (Corona) ran a 21-second PR in the 3200 at the California State Meet to win it in a time of 10:02.19. Gioana Lopizzo of La Costa Canyon finished third at the California State Meet in 10:08.32. Freshman Jaelyn Williams of Eastlake of San Diego finished fourth at the California State Meet in 10:11.01. Ashlyn Boothby of Scotts Valley has a personal best time of 10:26.12 in the 3200. Olivia Williams of Acalanes ran 10:24.85 in 2022. Jessica Frydenlund of Anacortes won the 2A Washington State Meet in the 3200.
Aydon Stefanopoulos of Los Gatos finished fourth at the 3200 California State Meet in 8:57.99 and is entered in the championship 2-mile. Jack Henzke of Seattle Prep ran 9:00.22 at the 3A Washington State Meet. Alexander Garcia-Silver of Marshfield ran 9:01.86 at the Oregon Relays 2-mile. Hayden Boaz of Summit ran 8:59.67 in the 3200 this season.
Sunday – Mile
The last heat of the girl’s mile is loaded with West Coast athletes. Skyline teammates Anna Callahan (4:44.05 for the 1600) and Rebecca O’Keefe (4:41.37 in the 1600) line up for the mile. Allura Markow of Dana Hills will run at Hayward next year for Oregon has run 4:44.56 in the mile. Jaelyn Williams of Eastlake (CA) has a personal best time of 4:46.26 in the 1600. Gioana Lopizzo of La Costa Canyon ran 4:47.76 in the mile this season and Rylee Blade of Santiago (Corona) has a personal best of 4:48.69.
The boy’s mile will be an epic race with the potential, if the weather cooperates, to have a number of athletes break the 4-minute mile barrier. Simeon Birnbaum, Rocky Hansen and Connor Burns are in the race and have already broken 4-minutes. Can West Coast athletes get under the time? Leo (4:00.77 in the mile) and Lex (4:01.52) Young of Newbury Park hope to break the barrier. Tyrone Gorze of Crater has run 4:05.47 in the mile this year. Carter Cutting of Wilsonville has run a 4:06.43 indoor mile this year. Brayden Seymour of Newbury Park has a 4:06.94 mile time and William Heslam (4:08.92) of Roosevelt has won some big-time races this year.
