Professional, college and high school athletes race at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, CA Saturday night in the Ten by Sound Running. The highlight of the evening is the 10,000 meter race and attempting to earn the Olympic standard (27:00 for men and 30:40 for women). TrackTown USA will be providing a wave lighting to pace for the athletes.
American Alicia Monson returns to the Ten after finishing second last year.. Ethiopian Tsigie Gebreselama will be there to challenge Monson. Only a few years ago, men who broke 27 minutes in the 10,000 was flirting with breaking the American record. Now one needs that time to be eligible for this summer's Olympics in Paris. Americans Woody Kinkaid, Joe Klecker and Grant Fisher will be pushing to run under 27 minutes. Jack Rayner of Great Britain, Mohammed Ahmed of Canada and Kazuya Shiojiri and Tomoki Oti of Japan are also Olympic standard candidates. Two athletes, Nico Young and Luis Grijalva, with 5000 meter seed times entering the race could be candidates to break the 27 minute mark.
Grace Barnett, Harmilan Bains and Taryn Rawlings enter the pro 1500-meters with 4:05 times and high school athlete Sadie Engelhardt of Ventura will race with the pros too. Olympic medalists Matthew Centrowitz and Evan Jager are entered in the men's 1500.
