Rose City Championship Invitational - October 13
Lincoln and Ida B Wells hosted the third annual Rose City Championship Invitational Friday at the Rose City Golf Course. Here are the highlights of the championship races.
Boys Championship
The boys championship featured several athletes who ran in the Jim Danner race a few weeks at Nike Portland XC. At the mile mark, Asher Danielson of Ida B Wells, Noah Laughlin-Hall of Summit, Hayden Boaz of Summit and Jack Meier of West Salem came by at 4:40. Laughlin-Hall of Summit took a slight lead on the pack at the 2-mile mark. In the last mile, Danielson of Ida B Wells took the lead and continued his winning ways with a 14:47.4 win in the championship race. Danielson has also won the Night Meet and the Jim Danner race at Nike Portland XC. Laughlin-Hall of Summit, Boaz of Summit and Meier of West Salem all broke the 15-minute mark in the 5000-meter race.
In the team championship, Franklin placed four runners in the top 12 led by Zafer Courcelle and won with 62 points. Summit (95) and Crater (107) finished second and third and set up for an exciting 5A state meet in three weeks. Crater raced the day earlier in the Crater Twilight 5000-meter track race which made for a tough double.

Girls Championship
Emily Wisniewski of Crescent Valley was selected this summer to be part of the Nike Elite program and has raced impressively this fall with victories in Oregon and Washington and a seventh place finish in the most competitive meet on the west coast, Woodbridge Invitational. Last year Wisniewski won the Rose City Championship in 18:25 and based on previous races this fall, that time was going to be eclipsed.
At the mile mark, Wisniewski ran 5:13 and opened a three second lead of Chloe Huyler of Lakeridge. Huyler ran at Sage Ridge in Nevada last year and won the 1A 1600-meter state meet. Wisniewski widened her lead to over 20 seconds at mile two and finished in a time of 16:27.9. Her effort has people thinking that she can be one of the top runners in the US in the championship season after the Oregon State Meet. Huyler's time of 17:00.3 was impressive too and has to be considered a person to watch at the Oregon State Meet in the 6A division. Wisniewski of Crescent Valley is the two-time defending 5A state meet champion. Nine athletes finished under 18-minutes in the girls championship.
Lincoln won again, despite not racing Keira Saavedra, with a team score of 68 points. Lincoln won the Hole in the Wall Invitational in Washington last week and won the Bob Firman Invitational in Idaho back in September. Freshman Ellery Lincoln led the Cardinals of Lincoln with a third place finish. Three Rivers League rivals Lakeridge (116) and Lake Oswego (125) finished second and third.
