Big West Preview - September 1
Blacklake Golf Course - Nipomo, CA
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo hosts a preview meet for Big West schools at the Blacklake Golf Course in Nipomo, California on Friday, September 1. Teams will get a chance to preview the the Big West Championship course which will be held later on October 27. Big West schools UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, host Cal Poly SLO, UC Irvine, Long Beach State, CSUN and UC Riverside are scheduled to compete. Cal State Monterey Bay, San Diego State women and Westmont will also compete on Friday.
The recent USTFCCCA regional pre-season poll has Cal Poly SLO women ranked 11th in the west region and UC Irvine women ranked 14th in the same poll. Cal Poly men are ranked seventh in the pre-season west regional poll and UC Riverside men are ranked 15th in the same poll.
Some of the top women returners from last year's Big West Championship entered on Friday are Brianna Weidler of UC Davis, Allie Scimia of Long Beach State, Julia Heckey of Cal Poly, Sierra Atkins of UC Davis and Sameen Andar of UC Irvine. The top men returners are William Fallini-Haas of Cal Poly, Aidan McCarthy of Cal Poly, Ethan Godsey of UCSB, Anthony Guerra of Cal Poly and Lukas Amare of UC Irvine.
We are looking forward to watching the freshman athletes making their collegiate debut on Friday.

UCSB XC Invitational - September 2
UCSB Lagoon - Goleta, CA
Rio Mesa hosts the season opener for CIF Southern Section Schools at the UCSB campus on Saturday morning. Since it is an early season affair, some athletes may use the race a workout or may not race at all. Based on the schools entered to race, here are the possible athletes competing Saturday.
CIF SS #1 ranked division 2 girls team Ventura are entered in the meet. Canyon of Canyon Country girls are ranked seventh in D3 and are racing Saturday. St. Margaret's are the #2 team in division 5 and they will make their season debut at UCSB. Harvard Westlake girls are ranked #6 in the division 4 poll. Last year Sadie Engelhardt of Ventura won the UCSB XC Invitational last year. Sadie is returning as the California 1600, 800 and cross country state champion.
Ventura boys, like the girls, are ranked #1 in the CIF SS division 2 poll. Santa Barbara are ranked #3 in the same division 2 poll. Harvard-Westlake boys are ranked #5 in division 4 and Foothill Technology boys are ranked #8 in division 4. The boy's team at St. Margaret's are ranked #3 in the division 5 poll. Santa Barbara's Andreas Dybdahl won the 1600 meter state track meet title last spring. Anthony Fast Horse and Micah Grossman also qualified for the 1600-meter race at the California State Meet. Trey Caldwell of De La Salle raced last year at the Champs Sports Cross Country Championship in San Diego.

Cool Breeze Invitational - September 2
Pomona Fairplex - Pomona, CA
Cool Breeze Invitational is under the lights of the Pomona Fairgrounds and is a great early season test for athletes.
There are a number of CIF SS ranked teams racing Saturday night. Division 1 girls represented at Cool Breeze include #1 Santiago/Corona, #2 Great Oak, #5 Santa Monica and #10 Los Alamitos. Top division 2 girl's teams include #2 Newbury Park, #3 host Claremont, #4 Citrus Valley, #7 Canyon/Anaheim Hills, #9 Ayala and #10 Peninsula. The division 3 ranked girls at Cool Breeze include #2 SouthTorrance, #4 Shadow Hills and #6 Yorba Linda. The #1 JSerra girls lead the division 4 ranked teams that also include #2 La Canada and #8 Bishop Amat. Cool Breeze has a competitive meet for the division 5 tanked teams like #1 Viewpoint, #3 St. Lucy's Priory, #5 Linfield Christian, #6 Sage Hill, #7 Flintridge Prep and #9 Hawthorne MSA. San Diego section teams to watch are Westview, Del Norte and Sage Creek.
Some of the top athletes at Saturday's Cool Breeze include 3200-meter state champion Rylee Blade of Santiago/Corona, Cameron Macias of Clovis West, Sophie Polay of JSerra, Phoebe Benun of Santa Monica, Maya DeBrouwer of La Canada, Brynn Garcia of JSerra, Jie Yi Denise Chen of Claremont, Kaylah Tasser of JSerra, Emily Russo of Del Norte, Sophia Ebiner of Bishop Amat, Sophie Grant of Newbury Park and Summer Wilson of JSerra,
The top division 1 teams for the boys include 2022 NXN team and CIF SS #3 Great Oak and #10 Santiago/Corona. The division #2 Newbury Park will be at Cool Breeze as well as fellow division 2 ranked teams such as #4 Tesoro, #5 La Serna, #7 Ayala and #9 Norco. Division 4 ranked teams include #4 West Ranch, #5 Agoura, #8 Servite and #10 Redlands East Valley. The division #1 CIF SS Cathedral has company with #4 JSerra and #10 Bishop Amat. Just like the girls division 5 teams, the boy's division 5 have plenty of competition like #1 Viewpoint, #2 Woodcrest Christian, #4 Windward, #5 Hawthorne MSA and #6 Flintridge Prep. Yosemite from the Central Section is also another strong program at Cool Breeze.
NXN qualifier Emmanuel Perez of Cathedral as well as his teammate Manny Hernandez will lead the individual boys. Dev Doshi of Newbury Park, Eyan Turk of Woodcrest Christian, Griffin Kushen of Tesoro, Emmanuel Wallace of Redlands East Valley, Gabriel Rodriguez of Great Oak, Gabriel Castillo of Etiwanda, Andrew Burr of Sacramento County Day, Adrian Welton of Westview, Sam Dresick of Clovis West and Ben Olney of Yosemite will be athletes to watch on Saturday.
